I hope you’ll remember that those who love you do not love you for the way you look. They love you for your personality, your little quirks and the way you always show up.

I hope you’ll remember that your body is just one tiny part of your story. It’s a page that folks will flick past, desperate to discover who you really are.

I hope you’ll remember that your relationship with your body is like any other relationship in life. It ebbs and flows, so it’s normal to experience incredible highs and difficult lows.

The hard days don’t cancel out the good ones, and I promise you that disliking your body today does not erase all the progress you’ve made.

Day #472947 of lockdown and I decided to wear a dress for our daily adventure (aka the dog walk) just to ~ feel something ~ but really all I felt was cold because it’s the middle of winter. Promptly returned inside to shove on a jumper and jacket for the walk, but it’s the thought that counts right? 😅

For a while, I was angry at myself.

Angry for drinking alcohol.
Angry for letting my guard down.
Angry for even going out that night.
Angry for not resisting more or fighting harder.

Years later, I’m still angry... but not at myself.

I’m angry that I spent years thinking this was somehow my fault.

I’m angry that women have to live their life in fear of men.

I’m angry that the stigma surrounding sexual assault has led me to not sharing this for almost half a decade.

I’m angry that hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of folks around the world have experienced what I did that night in 2016.

If you’ve experienced any form of sexual violence, please please know that it was NOT your fault and that your experience, no matter what, is valid.

Would you treat your friends the way you treat yourself?

Shame them for gaining weight?
Tell them not to eat today, because they ate too much yesterday?
Poke their stomachs for sticking out too much?
Repeatedly tell them that they’re not good enough, funny enough, smart enough?

I doubt you would. I think you’d tell them they are wonderful, that they matter and that they are valuable - no matter what.

So if we wouldn’t want to say these things to a friend, why are we so quick to shame ourselves? Maybe it’s time we started working on being better friends to ourselves... What do ya think?✨

I wish I had the power to make things better or at least find the words to bring you some comfort, but instead I’m just showing up, hoping that at least you’ll be reminded that we’re in this shit show together.

I’m still holding out hope that brighter, better days are on the way, but honestly sometimes, the hope feels near non-existent and that’s okay too.

Whether you’re holding onto hope or just feel totally deflated, I hope you know that how you’re feeling is so so valid💛
