It’s exam season, so I am stressed. Google normally has the answer for everything, but unfortunately not in this case. When I googled “how to deal with exam stress” I rolled my eyes at 98% of the words on the screen…
“Eat right.” So far today, I’ve had 4 slices of toast, a cookie and a doughnut… Is that “right”?
“Sleep well.” If we’re counting that accidental nap during the day then I’m getting 6 or 7 hours tops.
“Quit the bad habits.” You mean stress eating and cramming the morning of the exam? They actually kinda help, so no thank you!
“Learn to recognise when you’re stressing out.” I’m stressed out all the time, but I’m not sure how recognising that helps… What am I supposed to do about it?
Clearly Google wasn’t too helpful, however I have come up with a few tips and tricks myself. They don’t stop me from stressing out (pretty sure that’s not possible if we’re being honest), but they do help me cope.
1) An endless supply of tea/coffee.
It’s even better if there’s someone there to make it for you… Thanks Lewis.
2) Get out of the house.
Taking a short break can really help. You can’t study every minute of every day, and I love heading out for a walk to clear my head.
3) A box of doughnuts goes a long way.
A little sweet treat really can help to perk you up. I made a little trip to Tantrum Doughnuts after my exam on Thursday, and I can promise you it was a great decision.
4) A gin won’t hurt either.
Reward yourself for your hard work. There’s nothing wrong with a gin at the end of a long day of studying!
5) Find a way of studying that works best for you.
Some people thrive in the library, some people need colourful and categorised mind maps… Personally, I like studying at home the most and I find that writing notes out by hand is the best way to get them in my head.
6) Make plans for after exams.
Having something to look forward to will hopefully make the exam season go a little bit quicker. I don’t have any concrete plans yet, but I’m genuinely just looking forward to laying on the couch and watching Netflix without feeling guilty.
I’ve still got 3 exams to go, so I better get back to work…
